Top Ten Most Awesome Hashtags of 2011

Dec 15, 2011 admin

Barney StinsonBarnabus “Barney” Stinson, formerly known as Doogie Howser, and legally known as Neil Patrick Harris, is one of prime time TV’s most beloved characters. From his daddy issues to his serial womanizing, he’s the glue that holds together the friendships, and the successful ratings, on CBS’s “How I Met Your Mother.”

One of Barney’s strongest skills, other than “suiting up,” is his uncanny ability to effortlessly insert “hashtag” into any conversation, even when discussing ducky ties. (#yourtiestillsucks)

While there isn’t a hashtagger out there quite as awesome as Barney Stinson (@Broslife - #stinsonROCKS), in 2011 there were some hashtags that were so clever and funny they probably would’ve made him proud. True story.

Being such big fans of the hashtag, we (Jen and Michelle) would like to introduce a new year-end tradition at InkHouse – recapping our favorite Twitter hashtags used throughout the year.

We’re not talking about the most tweeted or trended hashtags of the year – plenty of other outlets have done that already (e.g. TechCrunch, Mashable). This list is going to be more thought provoking and the most legen – wait for it – dary, LEGENDARY list you’ll see at the end of 2011. You may laugh, you may cry, but at the very least, you should tweet.

Without further ado, the moment you’ve all been waiting for, the beacon of light at the end of the tunnel, here is our list – complete with bonafide examples from the Twitterverse:

1. #thingslongerthankimkardashiansmarriage (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - @BigMax55)
2. #placesyouwontfindLohan (A movie set - @MrKattWilliams)
3. #thingsthataredead (Kenny - @ERIC_CARTMAN)
4. #lessinterestingbooks (A Wrinkle in Pants - @michaelianblack)
5. #potentiallyAwesomeSupergroups (Chumbawumbakajagoogoo - @sgnp)
6. #lessambitiousmovies (O’ Brother There Art Thou - @J_A_M_4)
7. #threewordstoliveby (Brush. Floss. Rinse - @beautypeacelove)
8. #iwannaknowwhy (People like their own Facebook statuses - @MrRelationships)
9. #unlikelysequels (Titanic II - @ryanferris)
10. #twothingsthatdontmix (rapper names and Autocorrect - @_KZA)

So while your friends IRL may think of the octothorp as just another button on their cellphones, you can be sure that your Twitter followers (and even Facebook wannabes) know that what comes after ‘#’ has the potential of becoming a trending topic...or at least an amusing one. But since the year isn’t quite over yet, there’s still time to vent – if you have any pent up regrets of the past year, tweet them out with #2011regrets. And for you go-getters making your 2012 resolutions a few weeks early, go ahead and brag with #mygoalfor2012. Who knows? Maybe next year you’ll have a hashtag that tops the list.
